The TRUTH about
blood pressure and heart disease
Heart disease is the #1 killer of Americans. It accounts for
more than two out of five deaths. Unfortunately we have not made
significant progress in decreasing heart disease (atherosclerosis and
arteriosclerosis) during the past decade. The incidence of strokes (a
related circulatory illness) causing death has actually increased. More
than 50 million Americans suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure)
-- a significant risk factor for both heart disease and strokes.
These statistics are deplorable by anyone’s measure.
Americans have never tried harder to improve their health. We are
exercising more, eating low- or no-cholesterol, low-fat foods, and less
saturated fat. What could be wrong?
First, understand that hypertension occurs either from an
obstruction in the artery or rigid arteries. If your heart has to push
harder to get blood through the system, more stress is put on your heart
and your blood pressure increases. Rigid arteries cause the diastolic
pressure (the bottom number) to increase. Either atherosclerosis
(blockage) or arteriosclerosis (lack of artery flexibility) leads to
damage.
If your artery has rigid walls (like a straw), then your
diastolic blood pressure is raised - your heart is continually stressed.
If your artery’s walls are flexible, (like a balloon), your blood
pressure is low - your heart has an easy job.
Regarding obstruction in the arteries, if your blood
platelets don’t stick together or attach themselves to your artery’s
wall, then there can’t be a buildup, can there? No.
Therefore, the key question to ask ourselves is: How can we
increase vascular flexibility and prevent clots? If so, we can prevent
the majority of heart disease.
